![]() The Mars rover became NASA’s Perseverance rover, which landed on the Red Planet in February 2021 and continues to drill up samples of Martian soil. The Uranus mission was actually first recommended in 2011 during the last Decadal Survey, but the spacecraft was listed as the third-highest priority behind a Mars rover designed to look for signs of life on the Red Planet and a spacecraft to study Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, thought to harbor a liquid water ocean underneath its surface.īoth of those priorities have manifested into actual missions. The Decadal Survey is done so infrequently because of the extensive amount of time it takes to plan and build a flagship interplanetary spacecraft, often requiring roughly a decade of work to execute.īecause it takes so long to pull off a space mission, scientists have to be strategic about their asks, ranking the missions they want to happen in order of highest to lowest priority. Published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, it’s a massive document written every 10 years or so by groups of planetary scientists detailing the space missions they’d most like to see happen a decade into the future. The Uranus mission is at the top of a long wishlist detailed today in what is known as the Planetary Science Decadal Survey. “We have two in our cosmic neighborhood in our Solar System, and it’s high time we check them out.” “Ice giant-like planets are some of the most common ones out there,” Bethany Ehlmann, a professor at Caltech and one of the steering committee members on the Decadal, tells The Verge. And yet, they are the only main planets in our Solar System that we’ve never orbited. We don’t really know that.”Īdditionally, when scientists look at planets outside our Solar System, ice giants like Uranus and Neptune seem to dominate the Universe. “And so there’s been a long assumption that it’s mostly these ices but that’s that’s literally an assumption. ![]() ![]() “Our understanding of the interior structure of the planet is so poor that we really have very little idea what the ratio of those three things are to each other,” Jonathan Fortney, a professor at UC Santa Cruz who authored a report about possible missions to Uranus and Neptune, tells The Verge. Scientists believe the planet mainly consists of some combination of rock, ices, and hydrogen and helium, but that hasn’t really been confirmed. Most of all, they could tell us exactly what Uranus is made of. “Our understanding of the interior structure of the planet is so poor”Īn orbiter and a probe could provide a wealth of additional knowledge. But Voyager 2 didn’t stay for long it zoomed by during its exploration of the outer Solar System and kept going, eventually heading off into interstellar space. Voyager 2 unlocked some intriguing secrets about Uranus, discovering new moons and rings around the planet. The only spacecraft to ever visit Uranus was NASA’s Voyager 2 mission, which flew by the planet in 1986, coming within 50,700 miles of the planet’s cloud tops. If it works, the UOP mission could provide the most intricate details yet about this mostly unexplored world. Scientists envision such a mission launching sometime in the early 2030s as long as engineers get started on it as soon as next year. The mission concept would send a spacecraft into orbit around Uranus, along with a probe that would plunge into the planet’s atmosphere. ![]() Specifically, scientists are calling on NASA to create the Uranus Orbiter and Probe, or UOP. A new report compiled by planetary scientists from across the United States says that sending an interplanetary probe to study the ice giant planet should be considered the top priority for planetary exploration over the next decade. The space science community thinks the time is ripe to study Uranus in depth - and they’re being serious. ![]()

Nursing is a caring profession and a bedside attitude matters. These are uncomfortable because they are not aesthetically pleasing, but the increased pressure from graduated compression stockings may reduce the appearance of varicose veins. When you stand for hours a day for years on end, you're more likely to develop varicose and spider veins. Knee-high compression stockings are especially helpful in relieving varicose vein symptoms because they help push blood from the veins back to the heart from the toes all the way to the knees. BENEFITS OF COMPRESSION SOCKS FOR NURSES SKINThese dark varicose veins look like they are bulging out of the skin and can become painful. When blood pools, it puts pressure on the veins and causes them to swell and twist. Standing for long periods of time can be a risk factor for developing varicose veins, a condition that occurs when blood builds up in the veins instead of returning smoothly to the heart due to valve dysfunction. They relieve the symptoms of varicose veins Nurses, like athletes, may wear compression stockings on rest days to help them recover in time for the next doubles. In fact, the faster the blood flows through the body, the faster the healing. The circulatory benefits of compression stockings occur even when the body is at rest. Just as athletes need to take steps to help their muscles recover, so do nurses. It's no surprise that nurses can end their shifts as exhausted as a player after a big game. Nursing is a high-stress and tiring career choice. They will also prevent fluid from building up in your legs, another major cause of swelling. ![]() Compression stockings will help stabilize the musculature of the leg and keep any swelling to a manageable level. Standing for 12 hours a day can cause swelling in your calf and affect your ability to work. Compression stockings apply gentle pressure to the legs, squeezing them gently in a way that limits fluid buildup and helps reduce swelling. Poor circulation that occurs when your body is stressed from standing can cause fluid to settle and build up in your legs and feet, causing uncomfortable swelling. When you stand a lot, not only do your legs and feet get tired, but they can also become very swollen. Less leg fatigue means nurses are able to handle the day's treatments and charts the moment they get home, without the need for a foot massage. The faster oxygenated blood is pumped through the body, the faster it gets the nutrients it needs to keep running. Compression stockings for men and women promote blood circulation, help oxygen pass through arteries more easily, and allow deoxygenated blood to flow back to the heart more quickly. Working long hours can tire your legs, and nurses who are always on the go certainly don't have time to cheer up and relax at work. Here's why all nurses should have a pair of compression stockings. These socks are designed to increase circulation by putting pressure on the calves, something no full-time nurse should be without. There are many things you can do to achieve this, but a special consideration for all nurses is wearing compression socks. With all the hard work of nursing, it only makes sense to make your job as easy as possible. Reasons Nurses Should Wear Compression Socks Your patients' needs are often more important than your own, which means 12-hour shifts that require you to be ready to serve someone at all times. Not only are you standing all day, but there's often no guarantee that you'll be able to sit back and relax when you need to. If you have noticed spider veins, the recommended mmHg is 18. The Ladies' Singles Final traditionally takes place on the penultimate day of the tournament, with the Gentlemen's Final taking place on the very last day. The competition was expanded in 1884 to include Gentlemen’s Doubles as well as Ladies' Singles events, but it wasn’t until 1913 that Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles were also introduced. Back then, the main action took place on a central lawn court, with others around it, and that is where the 'centre court' designation originated.
